Imperial College London partnered with Altair to future-proof its research computing infrastructure by enabling IPv6 support in its HPC environment. The Research Computing Service team needed to accommodate growing virtualization and cloud workloads that exceeded IPv4 address limits. Working with Altair, PBS Professional was enhanced to support IPv6 communication and updated custom scripts. The transition enabled scalable, secure networking and removed dependency on IPv4. Imperial can now expand compute resources, sell unused IPv4 address blocks, and reinvest funds into research computing. The solution supports cutting-edge research across climate science, medicine, engineering, and chemistry while ensuring long-term sustainability of the university’s HPC infrastructure.
