Old School, New Development The closure of Pontymoile Primary School in 2014 has opened the opportunity for a new residential development in the south Wales town. The 2.2 acre site is being developed by social enterprise Bron Afon to provide 28 homes for rent and 11 to be oered for sale through Toerfan’s low-cost home ownership scheme, Help2Buy. Assessment of the site prior to construction showed the presence of radon at the property. Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas, found throughout the world, but is particularly common in parts of Wales due to the local geology. Radon is a health hazard, linked to lung cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease. Appropriate ground protection measures minimise the risk of the gas entering the building.
