It is known for its festivals, colonial style buildings and wineries. Water is always in close proximity when in Niagara-on-the-Lake and it is necessary for the orchards and vineyards in the area. Drainage ditches are used to move water through orchards and vineyards and, given the hilly nature of the land, pumps are used to push water up to some of the higher orchards and vineyards.
