Times are changing — privacy matters. It’s why more and more institutions of higher education are incorporating privacy features into campus restrooms. It’s also why California has become a pioneer in passing gender-inclusive bathroom legislation for public buildings. In 2016, these trends converged on the Moffitt Library at the University of California, Berkeley. Originally designed in the 1960s, the University began to reimagine the library with help from Gensler Architects, a student advisory group and University administration. While a gender-inclusive restroom design wasn’t required by law, administration was clear: inclusivity and privacy could not be compromised.
