Clifford Devlin were appointed to demolish the former Swim-Gym building and two other structures which housed office, clothing issue and repair facilities at their Peel Centre complex in Hendon. The works comprised removal of asbestos containing materials, soft stripping of all buildings, structural engineering review of the building con- struction, design and installation of temporary works which included two "bird cages" for access and sheeting for the asbestos removal. Structural demolition was carried out using both machine and hand demolition techniques. Elevations adjacent to vehicle and pedestrian routes were removed by operatives working from the boarded elevations of the scaffold.
