1 Labeling for Insulin Pen Safety The introduction of the injection pen in 1985 made living with insulin-dependent diabetes more manageable. Patients found the pen system, consisting of a cartridge and a disposable needle, easier to transport and administer than the traditional vial and syringe. The pens provided reliable, accurate dosing. However, with this advance in pharmaceutical technology came new challenges for patient safety.
