“CULTURE OF BUILDERS”
BUILDING A “CULTURE OF BUILDERS” THE UofM CARDIOLOGY FELLOWSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM: BUILDING A “CULTURE OF BUILDERS” BY LEVI NIEMINEN, PH.D. According to the New York Times, the number of Americans in the “Gig Economy” grew by 9.4 million between 2005 and 2015.(1) This raises interesting new questions about the meaning of organizational culture. A gig economy organization has an employee lifecycle that is on steroids. How do you create and maintain a culture in an organization where employees may not even see themselves as members of the organization, and where “membership,” even when perceived as such, is fluid, short-term, or intermittent? How do you reach out to these quasi- members and ask them to play a central role in forming and sustaining the organization’s culture?
