The Business Challenge The Business The Midlands Co-operative Society (MCS) is one of the largest independent retailers in the UK, with 180 stores and a turnover of £675 million. The Society’s principal business activities are food, fashion, home retailing and funeral services. In addition, it has interests in travel, motor dealerships, specialist vehicle construction, coffin manufacture, florists and farming, and manages a significant investment property portfolio. The MCS is the product of mergers between 65 societies covering a complex geographic area from Herefordshire to South Yorkshire.
