Peter Brett (PBA) | Bodleian Libraries Book Storage Facility Built in Swindon for the University of Oxford, the Bodleian Libraries Book Storage Facility has the capacity for 8 million volumes; combining 10,000m2 of warehouse space with 1,000m2 of ancillary office and processing space. The 84m span portal frame with a central column maximises the internal warehouse space, where racking extends up to the 12m eaves level. The building achieved a four-hour fire rating by using precast concrete sandwich panels, which also facilitated very tight temperature controls for the archive environment. The category 1 slab flatness specification was achieved with a fibre reinforced slab and with ‘alpha’ joints at 42m centres.
