This customer story explains how the Regional Technological Institute redesigned a milling head using additive manufacturing and Altair simulation tools. Traditional milling heads are heavy and constrained by conventional manufacturing techniques. RTI used topology optimization, lattice structures, material validation, and impact testing within Altair HyperWorks to design a lightweight steel milling head suitable for direct metal laser sintering. The final design reduced weight by 64%, improved dynamic performance, enhanced cooling efficiency, lowered energy consumption, and maintained structural stiffness. The project demonstrated how simulation-driven design and additive manufacturing enable innovative, patented solutions that are impossible to achieve using traditional methods.
