As global data generation is projected to more than triple by 2029, AI workloads require massive, economical storage for training data, images, and video—needs best met by HDDs for warm and cold data tiers, alongside SSDs for performance and tape for archival use. Total cost of ownership is the key decision factor, with SSDs carrying a 5–10x cost-per-terabyte premium over HDDs despite similar power efficiency. Structural economics ensure this gap will persist, while proven hyperscale reliability and continued innovation keep HDDs central to AI-ready, multi-tier storage architectures.
