BACKGROUND Health inequity is a social justice issue. The statistical differences in health outcomes between racial and ethnic groups among socioeconomic classes reveal themselves across key factors such as cigarette smoking rates, levels of physical activity, infant mortality rates, quality of nutrition, life expectancies, and even access to healthcare itself. Furthermore, disparities exist among various groups with regard to social determinants of health, including: Health disparities rooted in social determinants of health are referred to as “health inequities” and are regularly linked to social inequities that exist in American society today.
