How State & Local Governments Innovate with the Cloud

The share of government systems and applications hosted in the cloud has grown in recent years. Fifty-two percent of state and local government leaders in a 2021 survey said their organizations currently store mission-critical data in the cloud. But, the public sector’s cloud story is also more nuanced. Though more government organizations are realizing the value of the cloud, they still have a significant way to go to become truly cloud enabled. The Center for Digital Government’s 2020 Digital States and 2020 Digital Counties surveys found only 12 percent of states—and just four percent of counties—have migrated more than half their systems and applications to the cloud. Cloud adoption is steadily growing in government, but it will take some time for governments to transform their legacy processes and systems. It’s also likely hybrid cloud environments will be the norm for the foreseeable future. Even with this backdrop, it’s clear innovative cloud technologies will transform government as it exists today.
