The Secureworks® Threat Intelligence Executive Report (Volume 2024, Number 2) notes that despite the complex and multi-faceted takedown operation against the LockBit ransomware group on February 19, 2024, ransomware remains a significant threat to organizations globally. The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), the US FBI, and other international law enforcement agencies collaborated in Operation Cronos to disrupt LockBit’s infrastructure, seize servers, freeze cryptocurrency accounts, and arrest key affiliates. They took control of LockBit’s darknet sites, seized source code, and obtained decryption keys to aid victims. However, the group resurfaced shortly after the takedown attempts, evidencing ransomware’s resilience and adaptability as a persistent threat.
