In the first half of the year, 21 new groups emerged, with 68 total groups active, some rebranded due to law enforcement pressure. Attacks increased by 23% compared to 2023, with LockBit leading 474 extortion posts and RansomHub rising quickly. Mid-sized businesses with $5 million in revenue are five times more likely to be targeted than larger firms, as they hold valuable data but often lack mature defenses. While the number of ransomware families has dropped, attackers now focus on fewer but more effective strains, with code reuse and collaboration creating three major clusters.
