Cybercriminals became more opportunistic in early 2023, increasingly targeting schools, government agencies, and retail organizations. Instead of relying solely on ransomware, attackers shifted toward stealthier methods like cryptojacking, IoT malware, and encrypted threats. SonicWall researchers recorded 2.7 billion malware attempts globally in the first half of the year, with June reaching 576 million—the highest monthly total since March 2020. Kansas topped the list of states most likely to experience malware attacks, followed by California, Illinois, and Texas, while Alaska ranked lowest.
