MCRI’s data protection system was functional but required extensive manual effort. The setup relied on a single LTO tape library with LTO6 drives, and growing data volumes meant tape swapping would soon become necessary. Air‑gapped backup copies were stored separately, both onsite and remotely. According to Infrastructure Manager Nick Evans, instrument data output, once doubling every 18 months under Moore’s Law, was now increasing up to fourfold in just a year. As a result, storage and data protection demands were rapidly exceeding the limits of the existing infrastructure.
