Virginia Military Institute Indoor Training Facility | HKS Architects The Challenge To design a sustainable indoor athletic and fitness facility to help prepare VMI cadets to become “citizen- soldiers” while paying respect to the campus’ historic background and mandate. The Design Solution The 205,000 square foot facility embraces the Gothic revival style of Alexander Jackson Davis’ original 19th century campus design. Inside are modern-day physical training features including a 200-meter hydraulically-banked track, weight and cardio rooms, an obstacle course and physical and combat readiness training initiatives and seating for 1,800 people.
