While there are no methods that can guarantee comparability, individual cases are often matched on important characteristics to provide assurances that the groups are comparable. The process of matching cases is relatively simple: (1) for each study case, control cases are matched on the major characteristics; (2) if a control matches more than one case, one control is randomly selected; (3) randomly select the desired number of controls for each case.
