Tangara Technology Upgrade, Transport for NSW and Sydney Trains Long live the trains. The Tangara fleet operated by Sydney Trains consists of 446 double-deck, electric multiple unit trains manufactured between 1988 and 1995. The fleet operates predominantly as eight-car consists on the city network. Now deemed to be at half-life, Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW), in coordination with Sydney Trains, has developed various projects targeted to add 10 years to the life of this fleet. Collectively referred to as the Tangara Technology Upgrade (TTU), one major initiative includes replacing the obsolete onboard train management system, modifying the driver’s desk, and installing a train communications network and an upgraded public address intercom.
