Sustec Schwarze Pumpe GmbH operates a waste recycling centre (SVZ) at its long-established chemicals site, producing synthetic gas from waste. This gas is then converted into methanol for use in the chemicals industry. In 2004 this impressive facility recycled over 350,000 tonnes of material – most notably the plastics element from household recycling collections, wood, sewage sludge and liquid waste. The SVZ, which employs around 280 people, was acquired by the Swiss Sustec Group in October 2005. Recycling waste can be a dirty business.
