The project Suncor’s Pond 5 in Alberta is approximately 1.6 x 2.5km in area and 40m deep and lled with uid-like clay tailings or mine dumps. Mine regulators in Alberta required construction of a permanent cap on the pond and reclamation of the land. A solution was needed to dewater the ne tailings and increase their shear strength to allow for construction of the cap. The challenge Suncor Pond 5Northern Alberta is a remote location with harsh winter working conditions. Consisting of a oating cover over uid low-strength tailings, the working platform also presented equipment and personnel safety issues.
