Southend-on-Sea’s Civic Centre
Southend-on-Sea’s Civic Centre has been a focal point in the seaside town since 1967. It is a 13 storey building on Victoria Avenue, the main thoroughfare used by the majority of visitors to the town. Today it is a focal point for all of the Council’s main services. The challenge Since opening in the 1960s, the Civic Centre had become increasingly expensive to operate and maintain and it was in urgent need of modernisation. When Southend Council leaders decided that it was no longer fit for purpose, they wer e faced with deciding whether to refurbish the iconic building or relocate to new purpose built facilities.
