SoHo Scientists Take a "Quick Look" at the Sun Using IDL Customer Challenge Scientists needed a customized solution for studying data from instruments which were launched by SOHO and NASA to study the internal structure of the Sun. One of these instruments, The Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS), returns very large amounts of data that must be quickly and accurately processed. Solution Achieved XCFIT_BLOCK is a generalized, expandable “component fitting system” (CFIT) for planning observations for some of the SOHO instruments. It reads images (FITS files) from SOHO and other spacecraft, as well as ground-based instruments. The European Space Agency, in conjunction with NASA, launched the SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) project on December 2, 1995. The twelve instruments aboard
