Skara Sommarland
Skara, Sweden Doubling Down With Phased Development. Known for its cottaging and camping industries, Axvall (located in the Swedish municipality of Skara) is a busy region during summer months. Skara Sommarland, the region’s only theme park, saw an opportunity to become a destination for fun. Founded in the early 1980s, the park featured mostly dry rides and was drawing nearly 800,000 visitors per year. In 2001, after a period of steady decline in attendance, the park was acquired by the Parks & Resorts Group. Constrained with a short 80-day summer season, the new ownership knew that they needed some new iconic attractions if they wanted to make a splash.
