NTT DOCOMO, Japan’s largest mobile carrier, partnered with D-Wave to optimize its mobile network using quantum computing. Facing rising network demands from over 90 million subscribers and numerous connected devices, DOCOMO aimed to reduce paging signal traffic, which is used to locate devices across base stations. Using D-Wave’s hybrid quantum solver, they optimized the grouping of 270 base stations in three regions, reducing paging signals by 15% during peak times—cutting processing burden and allowing for 20% more device capacity. DOCOMO plans to expand quantum use across operations, signaling a new era in telecom efficiency.
