Providing Light to Rural Indonesia The Republic of Indonesia comprises more than 17,500 islands, approximately 6,000 of which are inhabited, spread out across 1.9 million square acres of land and sea. While there are areas of high population density, much of Indonesia’s population is scattered among the nation’s 75,000 rural, often isolated, villages. With no unified electrical grid, some 12,600 Indonesian villages have no access to utility power.
