When it comes to identifying the "hidden champions" of German plant and machinery manufacturing, the Probat works in Emmerich must surely be high on the list. Established more than 140 years ago, the company specialises in the design and manufacture of coee roasting machines. Originally founded by two salesmen and an engineer, all three of whom clearly had a passion for coee, the company celebrated the sale of its 100,000th roaster just 70 years later. Probat now employs some 400 people in Germany (650 in total around the world) and has a market share of more than 70%. Exports make up around 80% of its sales.
