Case Study An important component of the curriculum off ered in schools throughout Australia are activities tha t extend well beyond the school grounds. The extra-curricular activiti es off ered by high schools oft en see students and teachers venture in to remote locations when participa ting in cadets, orienteering, abseiling or school camps. The ongoing responsibility for schools to provide the highest level of care for students is heightened in these remote locations. The absence of basic infrastructure such as electricity, running water and, in many cases, telephone coverage are just some of the challenges the schools must address. During many of these activities, groups of students, teachers and volunteers are separated by considerable distances across rugged terrain.
