Case Study
Oyu Tolgoi Copper and Gold Mine
Oyu Tolgoi Copper and Gold Mine Oyu Tolgoi is located in the South Gobi desert of Mongolia, 80km’s north of China. Soon to account for 3% of the world’s supply of copper and gold, the 6.5 billion dollar project will produce an expected 450,000 tonnes of copper and 330,000 tonnes of gold annually. Employing just fewer than 10,000 employees during the development phase and just over 3,000 during production phase, the Oyu Tolgoi mine is the biggest foreign-investment project ever in Mongolian history. Design Considerations Climate The location of the mine was SSM’s biggest design hurdle. The air handling units had to be specially designed to withstand Mongolia’s harsh desert climate. This included sandstorms, below freezing temperatures, and blistering heat.
