CASE STUDY CALIFORNIA STEEL When established steel rolling mill California Steel Industries constructed a new furnace in their hot strip rolling mill, plant engineers knew that accessing the associated large components for maintenance was not going to be easy. With an annual operating capacity of 2.5 million tons, California Steel Industries is located about 50 miles east of Los Angeles near Fontana, California, and has been operating here since 1984. California Steel’s engineering group needed to develop a way to move oversized motors and fans out of the bay where the new furnace was located, into the next bay where maintenance could be safely performed.
