In the late 1920’s, the Army began improving the post’s infrastructure including a new 8-story, 618 bed hospital named Brooke Hospital Center. During World War II, the hospital continued to expand, pushing the capacity to 7,800 beds. At the end of World War II, Fort Sam Houston could no longer support a combat mission because of weaponry range growth and infantry division needs.
