AES deployed 42 LineVision sensors on five transmission lines across Indiana and Ohio to pilot Dynamic Line Ratings (DLR), calculating real-time line capacity based on actual conditions. The initiative aimed to boost grid efficiency, reliability, and capacity without costly upgrades. DLR outperformed static and AAR ratings—on one 345kV line, capacity increased by 141% with no outages required. A 69kV line showed cost-effective opportunities for targeted reconductoring, saving $ 1.24 M. The project proved DLR’s value in both urban and rural settings and established a scalable, data-driven model for future grid modernization.
