Leinster
Introduction BHP Billiton’s Leinster nickel operation is located approximately 600 kilometres north-east of Perth in the eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia. Leinster includes two underground mines and a concentration plant, which has an operating capacity of three million tonnes of ore per year. The operation employs 992 workers and produces between 40,000 and 45,000 tonnes of nickel in concentrate per year, which is then shipped by rail to the Kalgoorlie smelter. Leinster’s fleet is currently comprised of 42 heavy equipment units and 70 light vehicles. The Leinster nickel operation is part of the BHP Billiton Nickel West business group.
