India – a growing population but with severe water shortages Whilst India has a good average level of rainfall of 1100mm per year there are many regions which fall well below this average. One of these is the state of Tamil Nadu in the southern most part of the country. The capital, Chennai, also has limited water storage capacity and the existing reservoirs are often contaminated with sea water during flooding caused by the monsoon rains
