In July 2023, the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University of Texas received a $10 million NSF grant to enhance the Stampede3 supercomputer, marking a significant upgrade to U.S. academic research. Stampede3 will feature 4 petaflops of processing power, incorporating Intel® Xeon® CPU Max Series nodes and Dell PowerEdge servers to support AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and machine learning tasks. TACC's benchmarking of scientific applications showed up to 3.8x faster performance with the new Intel Xeon CPUs compared to the previous system, Frontera. The integration of high bandwidth memory (HBM) significantly boosted performance, delivering substantial speed-ups across a variety of HPC applications without requiring code changes.
