INTERCEPTOR GUARD DAM IN SALALAH, OMAN Facts Project Description Construction of a 6.1 km long crescent-shaped flood protection recharge dam upstream of Salalah Airport to intercept the streams of Wadi Zarsis being one of the major wadis of Salalah. It originates in the northern mountains and flows towards the city being joined by a number of other streams. The course of the wadi is obstructed by various developments, such as the airport and Diwan Palace. An existing embankment along the airport boundary protects the airport but diverts all the water toward the city through low-lying areas. After analysis of the flooding and the risk of damage to the city, it was decided to size the dam to store a probable maximum flood flow of 6,200 m3/s from a catchment area of about 150 km2.
