BBC Chartering November 2014 - Hulhumalé is an artificial island located in the south of North Male Atoll, Maldives. It was reclaimed to establish a new land mass required to meet the future housing, industrial and commercial development demands of the Malé region. Hulhumalé, which was initially developed for a population of 60,000, just commenced a second phase of land reclamation starting this July 2014. Currently home to about 30,000, the new reclamation enables the accommodation of a population of 100,000 in the future. The government estimates this second phase to cost about US $59 million and looks at reclaiming 240 hectares of land.
