Harwich Flood Barriers The refurbishment of Harwich Town Floodgates that benefited from Interserve’s technical skills and experience to deliver a logistically challenging scheme for the community. The town of Harwich has historically suffered from East Coast Flood events. The serious flooding of 1953 where 270 properties were affected was followed by a further significant event in 1978. The impact of these events initiated the construction of a sheet pile and reinforced concrete sea wall to the low lying perimeter areas of the town in 1984. The wall provides protection to a 1 in 200 year level event. 752 residential properties, 87 commercial premises, and other infrastructure assets such as the railway, rely on this level of protection should another flood event occur.
