Like many companies in highly regulated industries, this law firm tried to secure its data and intellectual property by restricting what end-users could do within corporate desktop environments. For instance, they removed elevated permissions so personal applications and home printer drivers couldn’t be installed, blocked access to websites considered personal such as social media and cloud storage platforms, and didn’t allow use of USB storage devices. The few users who interfaced with payment systems were given dedicated computers with a USB Hardware Security Module. Knowing that productivity is key to success, the company also wanted to give users some measure of freedom with their computers.
