The business and its challenges Esri UK has been in existence since 1969 when it started to pioneer Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Consistently a world leader, it now offers the mapping systems that will underpin the next generation of smart cities. It believes spatial intelligence will be the key to making the most of data in many organizations. In common with a lot of enterprises of scale, Esri UK had grown when technology had emerged and in spite of careful planning, as would be expected from any 50-year-old company, inconsistencies and incompatibilities in data had begun to emerge.
