The Process: Concept to Mass Production Windward Engineering produced prototype wind turbines using wood and ply-wood, the electrical power was produced by inserting newly designed and wound coils into the wood with the magnets placed around the periphery of the turbine blades. In the next stage of the development they altered the design of the turbine to a circular model. This new design allowed them to encapsulate the blade for safety reasons and have an improved solution for magnet placement. This also allowed the component parts to be injection moulded, which provide better quality and allowed mass production to become practical.
