Skidmore, Owings & Merrill faced major structural challenges designing the expansive roof of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. The roof required long spans, minimal depth, resistance to extreme climate conditions, and no expansion joints. Using Altair S-FRAME, S-STEEL, HyperMesh, and OptiStruct, engineers modeled complex geometry, performed nonlinear analysis, and optimized steel connections. The tools enabled fast iteration, accurate load assessment, and code-compliant design. Altair solutions helped SOM deliver one of the world’s largest roof structures efficiently, meeting architectural intent, structural integrity, and tight project timelines.
