CORUS

CORUS Queens Blast Furnace Stove Replacement Corus Steel, Scunthorpe May 2008 The project involved fast track replacement of the complete stoves during shutdown period. Each unit contains approximately 1800 tonne of refractory. The vessels stand approximately 100' high. Previous contractors removed the refractory by manual methods, which involved extensive labour and inherent risk of working at heights. Ron Hull Demolition - "thinking outside the box" - devised a method to utilise a hydraulic excavator inside the vessel and remove refractory progressively downwards. The concept proved to be a great success, enabling the project to be undertaken in record breaking time, without incident. On completion of refractory removal, the outer steel shell was removed sectionally by mobile crane
