The engineer specified both the Everdure Caltite System and as 'belt and braces', a famous, bituminous membrane to waterproof this suspended ice skating rink, over an electronics store on the floor below. The Caltite concrete was to be a one piece slab, but a concrete pump failure led to a cold joint being formed during construction. Some 18 months after completion, the ice rink started a slow leak into the store below, sufficient to colour the store's ceiling. The membrane had obviously failed, as anticipated.
