Cernavoda Tritium Removal Facility The Cernavoda Unit 1 in Romania came on line in 1996 with Unit 2 following in 2007. Both CANDU reactor units are top performers in terms of output generation and nuclear safety compliance. Taking into consideration the normal increases of tritium levels in the moderator and Primary Heat Transport (PHT) with the maturing of the reactor units, SNN (Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica S.A.) made a decision to design and construct a Tritium Removal Facility (TRF) for the Cernavoda site that would process heavy water to extract the tritium and recycle the heavy water to the units for reuse.
