RADARSAT‑2, funded by the Canadian Space Agency, was designed to carry advanced radar technology for detailed mapping of Earth’s surface, using sensor electronics from Astrium based on systems developed for Envisat. Astrium was also developing Beagle 2, a UK‑led Mars lander for the European Space Agency’s Mars Express mission, aimed at conducting experiments to investigate past life on Mars. Both projects demanded highly reliable systems and the production of extensive, rigorously tested software to ensure mission success.
