The district was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the urban districts of Braintree and Bocking, Halstead, and Witham. Braintree district lies at the heart of rural Essex, spanning some 236 square miles (612 km2) between the key regional centres of Cambridge, Colchester and Chelmsford. This is the second largest district, by area, in Essex and has the fifth highest population with more than 142,000 people. The district is made up of 30 wards, represented by 60 councillors.
