Top-down basement wall construction was used to reduce ground movements to protect the Grade I Pitt Rivers Museum 5m from the basement. The carbon footprint was calculated for different structural options to determine the most sustainable framing solution, with the method published in IStructE journal. The ‘parallel beam’ floor structure achieved the lowest possible overall building height in this highly serviced building. The framing provided cost-effective perimeter cantilever details and support to retaining walls in the two-storey, 10m deep, steel-framed basement. PBA’s work included
