Beiramar Tunnel | Vigo, Spain Located in northwest Spain, the city of Vigo is set along a bay of the Atlantic Ocean. During its history, the region has been attacked by many intruders, including the Vikings and later, Francis Drake. Forti?cations built during the reign of King Philip IV of Spain in 1656 have been preserved. Challenge As part of the ambitious “Open Vigo to the Sea” project, plans called for the main façade of Vigo Port to incorporate the Beiramar Tunnel, which would facilitate port logistics by daily accommodating 30,000 vehicles. The tunnel required a length of 522 meters, including a central zone of cut-and-cover and ramps. Solution The Vigo Free Trade Zone Consortium in Spain selected Louis Berger to perform the project’s engineering services, cost estimates and quantity
